From Passion to Perfection: Creating Timeless Musical Instruments
In 2007, I made the bold decision to leave my Aerospace Engineering degree in Bath and follow my passion for guitar making in the vibrant streets of London. Studying 'Musical Instruments' at London Metropolitan University, I honed my skills and graduated in 2010 with First Class Honours, along with notable awards recognizing my dedication and excellence.
Guided by talented mentors, I developed my craft, working under the expert guidance of Nicholas Blishen, Norman Myall, Martin Bowers, and Godefroy Maruejouls. The invaluable experience shaped my artistic vision and propelled me forward.
Acknowledgment of my artistry came with the prestigious 'Cockpit Arts / Arts Society' award in 2010, followed by finding my creative haven at Cockpit Arts in Creekside, Deptford. This inspiring environment became the birthplace of my artistic creations.
Sharing my knowledge became a natural progression, and I began teaching guitar making at London Metropolitan University in 2015. Witnessing the growth of aspiring luthiers and nurturing their creative journeys has been incredibly fulfilling.
In 2016, I was honored with the title of 'Artist in Residence' at The Pound Arts Centre in Corsham, near Bath, a transformative experience that expanded my horizons and fueled my creative fire.
Recognition for my craftsmanship arrived in 2016 when GQ Magazine celebrated Alex Bishop Guitars as one of the 'Coolest Things in the World.' The acknowledgment validated the passion and dedication poured into each instrument.
Relocating my workshop to Bristol in 2019, I continue to craft gypsy jazz and folk guitars, teach guitar making, and provide comprehensive stringed instrument repair services. The vibrant musical community in Bristol offers an inspiring backdrop for my work.
Since 2020, I've had the privilege of sharing my insights and expertise as a regular contributor to Guitarist magazine through my column, 'Confessions of a Luthier.' It's a platform where I reveal the untold stories and secrets of the craft, providing readers with a glimpse into the fascinating world of guitar making.
The true fulfillment of my craft lies in seeing talented musicians bring my guitars to life through their music. Witnessing their artistry unfold on my instruments inspires me to strive for perfection and create truly exceptional musical instruments.
